When the Merchant ends his tale, the Host says he wants to be safe from women like May, but his wife does have a babbling, shrewish tongue and many more vices. He bitterly regrets that he is tied to her for life but hopes no one will mention it because women have ways of finding out By the end both the host and Merchant admit they have bad marriages.

The merchant's tale begins with a noble knight named Januarie who, after a life of a bachelor, wants to settle down and have a wife, who he wants to be young and pretty. Januarie’s friends listen to his plans and offer advice. His friend, Justinus, says not to marry as you can’t trust women; Placebo, says Januarie should decide alone.

The God Pluto and his wife, Proserpina, discuss the situation and restore Januarie's sight because women are so deceitful. Prosepina, says men are so lecherous that she will provide May with a believable excuse when he does.

Wait a damn minute...
May leads Januarie to a pear tree and, pretending she has an insatiable lust for a pear, tells her husband to bend over and let her stand on his back. Damian is actually in the tree and they are having sex whilst standing on her husband’s back. Pluto decides to restore Januarie’s sight at that moment.

You're old and confused
Thanks to Proserpina, May gives a credible excuse: Januarie's sight is faulty — the same as awakening from a deep sleep when the eyes are not yet accustomed to the bright light and seeing strange things, dimly. She then jumps down from the tree, and Januarie clasps her in a fond embrace.
