I’m Viram. It's nice to meet you too! I am new here and don't know anyone.
Oh don't worry, I have been here for three days but I will show you around for sure!
Thank you! That is very nice of you Noah!
So Noah, what do you guys do at this camp anyways?
wow! I think I am going to enjoy coming here!
Well, we get to know each other, eat food, share stories and have a great time!
WALKING TO THE PARK TO TALK
Viram since you missed getting to know people why don't you and I get to know each other?
Why don't we ask our consular if we could go for a walk to the park right over there so that we can talk?
Yea! Sounds good to me! I have lots to share!
So how old are you, Noah? Are you the same age as me?
Oh nice! Me too! Tell me a little bit about your background.
I am 12 years old, what about you?
I have never heard of that before, what's it all about? Do you believe in God?
Well both of my parents are from here and I am Amish.
My parents are from India but they came here when they were little, we are Jainism.
We don't believe in God but we do believe in the Divine. We should not be doing anything that includes violence such as harmful things to others and even to animals.
I agree though, no one should use any type of violence toward others, problems should be solved by using our words, not hands.
We have a strong belief in faith and put God, our families, and our community before everyone else. My siblings and I are disciplined children and we are dedicated.
Very interesting, I like that a lot!
It is! It's called the Om/AUM which is used in ancient Jain scriptures to represent the Navakar Mantra. It is a symbol of Jainism. What is on your shirt?
May I ask what is on your shirt? It looks like the symbol, something similar to mine actually.
It’s a symbol as well which is called the hex sign, it kind of looks like a barn star and is usually seen in the Amish communities.
Oh wow! That is very cool!
Okay Kids! Home time!
It was nice getting to know you today, I learned about things that I have never learned about!
That is so nice of you I would love to! Thank you!
U too!! Hey Noah, since you have been such a nice friend would you like to come over for dinner?
Not a problem, you are welcome anytime! Why doesn't Viram show you his room while I finish preparing dinner?
Hi Honey! I'm so happy to hear that! Of course, he can stay, he is more than welcome too!
Hi Ms, thank you so much for letting me stay over for dinner!
Hello Mom! I brought over a friend for dinner if that is okay with you. I had a great day at camp because my friend Noah made me feel so welcome. Is it okay if he stays for dinner?
This book is my Jainism Sunday School homework, it is all written in Agams and it holds lots of Lord Mahavir's teachings.
So here it is!
It looks very nice! I like the colours and the flags. Ouuu, what is this book?
Oh wow that is very cool! The writing looks so different from ours!
What are you learning about right now in your Sunday school?
The most important person is the founder of Jainism who is Rishabhanatha. The Jains or Tirthankaras are spiritual leaders who achieved enlightenment and have been liberated from the cycle of rebirth.
Well we are learning about the important people and important places in the Jainism religion.
Who is most important in your religion Noah?
Where do you and your family worship?
We have the bishop who is the leader and the head of the Amish church.
We do not worship in any special place, we worship just in our homes and have church services in them.
My family and I worship together at a place called Basadi. People of the Jainism religion can also worship at a Temple as well.
That is very cool, I have learned something today!
Kids Dinner!
Wow! Everything looks and smells so good! What are we having?
Oh yummy, I love salad!
Since we are vegetarian we are having a salad with tomatoes and beans in it.
Well I am not vegetarian so we eat foods like turkey, potatoes, vegetables and bread.
What types of foods do you eat, Noah?
Hi everyone I hope you all had a great night, it was a great first day yesterday! As you know tomorrow is culture day, now I want each of you to bring in one thing from home and describe to us how it represents your culture.
Ouuuuu yayyyyyy
What are you thinking of bringing in?
Me too, I am going to leave it as well.
I have something in mind but I am going to leave it a surprise, what about you?
I want to bring in something that represents me and my religion. My religion is all about having a strong faith and a good relationship with God and with my family.
I think I will bring in a picture of my family and show everyone the cross that I wear every day and what it means to me. My family and God are a big part of my life so I think that it's a good idea to be sharing these things.
I want to bring in an object, but also something that represents my culture. A Jainism stature takes a big part in my religion so I like that I will bring in the one my grandma gave me when I was younger.
I will show my stature to the rest of the kids at camp and explain to them what it means to me and my culture.
Okay everyone please gather around as we are going to start our show and tell you about culture day! Who would like to go first?
Okay perfect Noah! Show us what you brought.
I would!
I brought in a picture of my family. My family is a big part of my religion since we are always putting family first and looking out for each other. My family and I have a strong faith in God and we always go to church. Family and faith are also two of the values in our codes of ethics. I would also like to show you the cross that I wear, I feel that it keeps me close to God and that I have him with me wherever I go.
That was very nice of you Noah! Thank you for sharing, I think we all got to learn something new today! Who would like to go next?
Okay Viram, please share with us what you brought in.
Me!
So today I brought in a statue from my religion, it is called a jain statue. This statue plays a big part in my religion, my family and I worship this Jain statue. This statue is the Tirthankaras which is a teaching God. This statue is special to me because my grandma got it for me when I was younger, I love it so much.
Thank You Viram, that was lovely and thank you for sharing with us! Now kids that it is for today, that is it for our camp week! I hope everyone had an amazing time, met new friends and learned new things!
Hopefully we will see you all next year!
