After Miranda's mom retrieves her from the school, they both, Mrs. Nesbitt, and Johny go to the store to get food. They start realizing how crazy the whole situation is, with how desperate and violent everyone is.
Chapter 12
Megan doesn't eat all of her sandwich because she splits it with people at the lunch table. Miranda notices this and confronts Megan. Megan says that God will give her sustenance and that she is willing to die if that is what God tells her.
Chapter 13
Miranda goes to see Megan and realizes how weak she is, and how her faith has caused her to starve herself, and likely die soon.
Chapter 21
Miranda finds the chocolate chips that she had grabbed at the store, and starts eating them, when her mom sees her and starts yelling at her. When Miranda eventually spills the chips on the ground, her mom tells her to eat them.
Miranda is trying to get into the hospital to get Peter to help her mom. The guards stop her saying she isn't allowed in. Miranda stays out there for 3 hours until Matt comes and knows one of the guards, who then let them in.
Miranda goes to the town to find out that there is a food supply coming. She rides back home with the mayor with a brand new supply of food.
