" His head drooped on its shoulders, like a scarlet flower languishing and dying " -434"He hurled himself on the body of his friend and rested thereat last in the peace of death."-447
"Euryalus was held back by the darkness under the trees and by the weight of his booty, and in fright lost his way."-386
Book 10
."Aeneas was like Aegaeon, who they say has a hundred arms and a hundred hands.".- 565.
Book 11
Aeneas is a way, but its time for war, when Turnus tries to burn Trojan ships, Jupiter turns them into nymphs. Nisus and Euryalus go into Latin camp + kills soldiers, Euryalus proves spoils bad, after he takes a helmet leading to both their deaths. Euryalus's mum weeps as Latin march around with their head in sticks. Turnus gets into Trojan camp but locks himself inside, jumps in river to escape. Links to low morality in Rome, emphasis to relationships/bonds, links to Civil war and loss (Euryalus mum weeping, soldiers mourn comrades). Soliders still lishening to him -good leader, Apollo tell Ascanius to go to bed, trusting -leaves son in charge. Apollo takes Ascanius to bed, Juno inspires war in Latins, Jupiter on fates side, saves ships.
Book 12
Aeneas is back in this book! :), but first, council of the gods (Juno vs Venus, no more interfering (that'll be ignored)). Fighting! Death of Pallas, Aeneas goes in to a furor filled rage, he kills Mezentius and his son. Meanwhile, Juno has lured Turnus onto a ship. Links to Civil war/loss ("brother of...", "son of..."). Not very Stoic -furor due to Pallas death, +human sacrifices -not pietas. Compared to monster. Council of the gods, told not to intervene, Venus + Juno ignore this, told not to get in the way of fate. Juno still trying to save Turnus.
The End
Aeneas + others bury their men (including Latins), Aeneas has to tell Evander the bad news, Evander wants revenge. We meet Drances, who dislikes Turnus as much as I do. War continues, an attack from the Trojans, Camilla (+ her soldiers) fight back, Arruns (+ Apollo) kills Camila. Links to Civil war/loss ("brother of...", "Son of..."), reminiscent of wars in Rome, familiar to audience. Pietas towards dead, decent leadership, seems to have recovered from furor/anti-stoic incident (book 10), significantly more stoic. Apollo has to help take down Camila, Apollo being Augustus patron god.
:)
Aeneas and Latins try and send a peace treaty, Juturna (sent by Juno) re-starts war, Aeneas is wounded, Venus brings herbs (bonding moment with son), Juturna disguised as charioteer leads Turnus from battle, Amatta kills herself thinking Turnus died. Turnus returns to battle and duels with Aeneas, who sees the belt he stole of Pallas and kills him. Use of well known battle strategy, wedge formation. Juno asked Latin culture to be mixed with Trojans, and keep their name. Romans not Trojans. Aeneas still got furor -battle, caring -bonding moment with son, hero -gods help. Pietas, and good leader. Clemencia -calls for peace. Juno gives up on losing cause, Latins keep their name. Juno + Juturna help Turnus, Venus helps Aeneas -herbs + during dual.
Good luck on the exam!
