They first land at Aeolia, Aeolus gives Odysseus a bag of wind, which the crew open and blow the ship away, while in sight of Ithaca. They next meet the cannibals. Then at last the find an island to stay on, Odysseus sends out a search party, but they get turned into pigs by Circe, a witch who lives on the island. With help from Hermes, he turns his crew back into men. Circe gives them directions to the underworld.
Book 13
When he reaches the underworld, he follows Circes instructions, and he meets the prophet Tiresias. He tells him not to eat the sun gods cows. Odysseus also listens to the stories of the ladies and sees his poor old mother. He also meets some people he used to know, like Ajax, Agamemnon, and Achilles, who says fame ain't worth death.
Book 16
Next on his travels he encounters the Sirens. While moving out the way from Charybdis, 6 men are eaten by Scylla, whom Odysseus never thought to mention. Later when they reach an island containing the sun gods cattle, Odysseus goes for a nap, but his crew eat the cows after they run out of food. The ship was struck by lightning, his crew dies. Odysseus floats back to Charybdis, and then to Calypso's island.
Book 17
When they land at Ithaca, Odysseus is still asleep, the crew carefully pick leave him and his gifts on the beach. Athena hides him in the mist. At first Odysseus thinks he has been tricked, and then he meets Athena in disguise. While Odysseus tries to explain away the treasure, Athena reveals herself, and explains the plan. She warns him of the suitors, he disguises himself as a beggar. Athena goes to fetch Telemachus.
Telemachus enters the shepherds hut, a disguised Odysseus tells him to man up against the suitors. Once the Shepard is gone, Odysseus reveals himself to Telemachus, at first Telemachus doesn't believe that the beggar is his father. Odysseus tells him the plan (hide weapons and lie to suitors). Meanwhile, the suitors plan to kill Telemachus, Penelope yells at the suitors, and goes to cry, Athena puts her to bed.
Menanthius bullies disguised Odysseus while he travels to the palace with the swineherd. Odysseus goes to beg for food, but while their Alcinous hits him with a stool at him. Penelope wishes to meet with the beggar, but Odysseus refuses to meet with her as he is worried the suitors might beat him up, but agrees to meet her later.
