Many people suffered during the depression, not able to buy food or medical care. However, some did not because they had a job, and the cost of living went down.
What are we going to do? We have no money for food or shelter!
I think I'm going to have to go to a relief camp
People went to relief camps to earn a bit of money for their families. The conditions were not good, however. Another option was to receive pogey from the government, but this had strict requirements such as turning in your driver's license. Farmers living in the West dealt with dust bowls, which affected their harvest. All in all, the Great Depression was a very challengning time to live, and very different from the 1920s, where everyone was celebrating being done with the war.
