  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Mankind is its own worst enemy.
  • One major theme of " The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that mankind is its own worst enemy. One example that supports this theme is when Les Goodman's car startedby itself and randomly. Most importantly this supports the theme because once his car started the residents all started assuming that Les Goodman is the alien without reasoning or explanation. Another example is when Charlie blamed Steve for being the alien. Especially since it supports the theme because Charlie and the residents had found out about the radio. They all start questioning Steve about what the radio was for and Charlie one of his best friends, had started all the arguing and questioning. The final example is when the residents were attacking Charlie's house with rocks. In particular this supports the theme because after Charlie shot Pete Van Horn all the residents were confused and were just scared so in return they started attacking Charlie and his house because of what he had done to one of their beloved neighbors. In conclusion, even when friends and neighbors go so long without electricity it can make them unfriendly and thoughtless. This is why the chosen theme of "Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that mankind is its own worst enemy.
