English merchants founded the East India Company in 1599 and began constructing trading warehouses in India shortly after.
During the 16000s, India was not unified. It was divided into many small states ruled by separate kings. Trading in Indian states was permitted by the East India Company sometimes, but not always.
French East India Company existed at the same time. There was a fierce rivalry between the French and the British. During the time period between 1700 and 1700, the conflict escalated into full-scale war and the armies were entangled.
According to the British, any Indian ruler who helped them with trade would be supported, and they would also defeat any ruler who obstructed trade.
After convincing an Indian general to fight with him, Robert Clive took over the Bengal empire by overthrowing Siraj-ud-Daula the ruler. He was captured and killed, allowing the British to take control of Bengal.
The French were soon defeated and forced out of India. In England, Robert Clive was considered a hero. He was sent back to India to rule Bengal in 1765. Subsequently, he took control of more and more Indian states.
