  • The Guests play a game of "Smee" where eventually they all form a chain on the staircase, when a count is done to see if everyone has made it Sangston does a count when he counts thirteen people instead of twelve he is confused, this is the first sighting of the unidentified person

  • The next sighting of the mysterious figure is when the Sangston's son is looking for Smee when he checks a cupboard and reaches out to hand but he feels nervous and runs away
  • — I’d marked it down as a good place to hide when it was my turn,and I had an idea that “Smee” might be there. I opened the door in the dark, felt round, and touchedsomebody’s hand. “Smee?” I whispered, and not getting any answer I thought I had found “Smee.”’

  • In the final round of Smee, Jackson is searching for Smee and finds someone hiding behind a curtain, assuming they're Smee when they don't answer. He becomes uncomfortable after a long silence and asks for their name where she say her name is Brenda Ford, Brenda mysteriously disappears and when talking to Langston, it's revealed the Brenda is the girl who died 10 years ago.
  • ‘Miss Who? he shouted.‘Brenda Ford—she told me her name was.’Sangston put down his glass and laid a hand on my shoulder.‘Look here, old man,’ he said, ‘I don’t mind a joke, but don’t let it go too far. We don’t want all thewomen in the house getting hysterical. Brenda Ford is the name of the girl who broke her neck on thestairs playing hide-and-seek here ten years ago.’
