  • Marie Curie was born on November 7 , 1867. Her father wanted her to be as well educated as his sons.
  • In 1894, Marie Curie met Pierre Curie, a professor in the School of Physics. The following year, they were married.
  • Inspired by Henri Becquerel’s discovery of radioactivity in 1896, Curie isolated the elements polonium and radium.
  • In the start of Marie Curie's career and research, conditions were difficult and laboratory arrangements were lacking. The Curies had to struggle to make a living.
  • Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.
  • In 1897, Marie Curie gave birth to her first daughter. However, this did not interrupt her research in science.
  • She was made the head of the International Red Cross’ radiological service.Throughout her life, Curie and her daughter, Irene, used radium to help reduce suffering during World War I.
  • During her lifetime, Marie Curie received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. Marie Curie was the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize, and in two different fields.
