Jerome
Yazmin
According to Bronfenbrenner's Bioecological model of development, “the physical and social context in which we develop are ecosystems because they are constantly interacting with and influencing each other” (Woolkolk, p. 81)
Jerome is a 3rd grader who is has attended this school since kindergarten. Jerome is an only child of African Americanparents. He has always demonstrated a confident attitude and respect for others. He would be the friend in the playground if he noticed the other students got hurt or were sad, he will go over and ask them to go play with him or give them a hug. Since kindergarten, he has been an active child, always has to be moving and quite chatty. He demonstrates high level of understanding in Math. During Math lessons, he seems to mentally get the answer and when asked, he is able to explain his reasoning for how he solved the problem and what strategy he used. Even though he may lose focus at times during reading or other tasks, he is still able to listen and understand the lesson. The teacher will ask about the content on hand, and he is able to respond about to the context of the lesson.
Yazmin is a 3rd grader who is new to the country and the school. She came from Mexico and had just started this year in an English Only school. Her preferred language in oracy and literacy is Spanish as she did attend school in Mexico previously. Her family structure consisted of her parents and 2 siblings living in the same household as her aunt and uncle plus cousins. In the first week of school, Yazmin kept quiet and was timid to communicate to teachers and other students even when spoken to in Spanish. She did start spending time with 2 other girls from the same class who also knew Spanish, and they live in the same neighborhood. After building a friendship with her peers, Yazmin is more motivated in class and puts more effort in her tasks.
To support Yazmin we will facilitate her literacy development by growing her receptive language by being expressive in my vocabulary
To support Jerome because he is performing higher than others in his class. Differentiating assignmentsto further challenge him therefore if he is a quick finisher, he can challenge himself with a follow up question. Another way that challenges the student by incorporating higher-order questions and allow him to further think and collaborate with pairs or group to share ideas.
