- That dog of Candy’s is so God damn old he can’t hardly walk. Stinks like hell, too. Why’n’t you get Candy to shoot his old dog and give him one of the pups to raise up? (Steinbeck 80)
- Just because of my race, I am seen as weaker. I will easily be replaced by someone deemed stronger.
- This shows the reality of what happens once what deems you 'useful' wears out. Once you loose what makes you needed, you become weak. Candy exemplifies this idea, and recognizes it by saying he will get replaced by someone strong, someone who over powers him.
- This is even shown in a dog. They see no use in the dog, who is simply getting old. something no one can avoid. They say they should replace him due to his lack of usefulness.
- Just because of Crooks race, he is seen as less than. In a heartbeat, he would be replaced with someone who is seemed more qualified and stronger.
