- Fortunato begins to breath heavily and coughs, the nitre is attacking his lungs. Montresor suggests to leave the cotacombs, knowing that Fortunato doesn't let his pride go and would deny the offer. Mentioning Luchesi is the verbal weapon Montresor keeps using.
- Luchesi cannot tell Amontillado from Sherry!
- *coughs and breaths heavily*
- It's the nitre. Let's stop here, I can ask Luchesi for his opinion.
- Fortunato doesn't feel well at all, but he wants to keep going to experience the Amontillado. Montresor offers him a different wine he should drink to fight the nitre in his lungs, with the intention of making Fortunato more drunk and less clear minded.
- It's no Amontillado, but it'll help against the nitre.
- We're almost there, take this for now!
- Montresor leads Fortunato into a niche in the wall and chains him. He then starts building a wall with bricks and a mortar he prepared earlier. Fortunato, trapped now, first can't comprehend what is happening and plays it off humorously. He then starts begging for Montresor to let him out. Montresor finally throws his torch into the niece and leaves, leaving Fortunato all alone and letting him die.
- For God's sake, let me out!
