Odysseus and his men are seen by Polyphemus, the cyclops, who is now mad someone is on his island, and eats some of Odysseus's men. After that, Polyphemus traps the rest of the men in his cave which is sealed by a big rock that can only be moved by him.
"We are from Troy, Achaean, blown off course by shifting gales on the Great South Sea..."
"Strangers, who are you? And where from?"
Odysseus comes up with a plan to offer the cyclops wine and get him really drunk, and then stab him with a big stake.
"Cyclops, try some wine. Here's some liquor to wash down your scraps of men."
"Give me another, thank you kindly. "
Polyphemus eye is gouged out so he calls onto his other fellow cyclops for help. Thankfully, Odysseus was smart enough to trick Polyphemus beforehand into thinking his name was "Nohbdy".
"What ails you, Polyphemus? Why do you cry so sore on the starry night? You will not let us sleep. Sure no mans driving off your flock? No man has tricked you, ruined you?"
"Sweet cousin ram, why lag behind the rest in the night cave?"
.
Now that Polyphemus was blind, Odysseus came up with a plan to tie his men under the rams in order for Polyphemus not to sense them escaping.
.
"O Cyclops? Would you feast on my companions? Puny, am I, in a Caveman's hands? How do you like the beating that we gave you, you damned cannibal? Eater of guests under your roof! Zeus and the gods have paid you!"
Once Odysseus loads what was left of his men and Polyphemus's rams, he decides to boast to Polyphemus. This caused Polyphemus to throw a hill at Odysseus's boat which sent the boat back to the island.
THEME: Pride causes people to make stupid choices even when stakes are high.
"Cyclops, if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes' son, whose home's on Ithaca!"
"O hear me, lord - grant that Odysseus, raider of cities, never see his home..."
After the crew and Odysseus get the boat moving again, Odysseus decides to boast one last time, this time accidentally sharing his name. Once Polyphemus hears Odysseus's actual name, he prays to his father Poseidon asking him to curse Odysseus.
