  • Good question! Simply put, comorbidity is a condition where two or more disorders are present in an individual.
  • I am certain that our viewers are as informed as I am now, but for clarity sake can we have an example? After that we'll begin taking questions from the audience.

  • Would the disorders have to be mental or physical ONLY, or can they be a mixture of both? to be classified as comorbidity.

  • The co-occurrence of the disorders can be physical ONLY, mental ONLY or a mixture of both.
  •     
  • Prime examples of comorbidity in individuals are hypertension and diabetes, social phobia and bipolar disorder or diabetes and bipolar disorder, respectively.
  • Dr. Pickens, you just mentioned bipolar disorder in your example of comorbidity. Can you tell us some of the causes of BP?

  • People with BP experience changes in their moods, energy and functional ability. Common risk factors of the disorder include genetics, life events and substance misuse.

  • Hi Hanna-lee. I've never been to Jamaica, but I hope to visit some day. Nonetheless, I can provide you with some generalized ways that Jamaicans can improve their holistic well-being.

  • Dr. Pickens, as it relates to treating mental illnesses, can you educate us on some of the psychotropic drugs that are used?

  • Okay, so riding off of that question asked by the lady in the audience, can you briefly discuss the types of disorders treated with psychotropic drugs?

  • I sure can!

  • Psychotropic drugs that are commonly prescribed to treat patients with mental illnesses are antidepressants, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines and anticholinergic drugs.
  • What about behavioural disorders? Are they not treated with psychotropic medications?

  • Disorders that are usually treated with psychotropic drugs include mood disorders, schizophrenia and its counterparts, and anxiety disorders.
  • Behavioural disorders are usually treated with various types of therapy. Medication should be a last resort, and to be clear, it does not treat the disorder, it is intended to reduce symptoms.
