Storyboard Text

  • Mood
  • Foreshadowing
  • Irony
  • In the exposition the author describes the mood as dark and scary. The author establishes the mood from the quote: “dank tropical night that was palpable as it pressed its thick warm blackness in upon the yacht.”
  • Conflict
  • Foreshadowing happens when Rainsford and Zaroff are having dinner together. During dinner Zaroff says, “I hunt more dangerous game.”, when talking about hunting. When Zaroff says “dangerous game” he really means humans.
  • Climax
  • An example of Irony is when Zaroff says Rainsford will feel like a “new man”. Zaroff says, “You need a good, restful night’s sleep. Tomorrow you’ll feel like a new man, Ill wager. Then we’ll hunt, eh? I’ve one rather promising prospect?” When Zaroff says “new man” and “promising prospect” he is talking about Rainsford being the person who he is hunting. This is verbal irony.
  • Resolution
  • The conflict in the story is when Rainsford and Zaroff agree to hunt each other. Rainsford does not want to hunt humans with Zaroff and Zaroff becomes angry. He treathens Rainsford by saying, “As you wish, my friend,” he said. “The choice rests entirely with you. But may I not venture to suggest that you will find my idea of sport more diverting than Ivan’s?” This is external conflict.
  • The climax of the story is when Rainsford kills Ivan with the trap and then jumps off a cliff. This moment was very suspenseful and had a lot of action. A quote is “Twenty feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed. Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea…” This quote shows the suspense of the moment.
  • The resolution of the story is when Rainsford kills Zaroff and saves himself. Zaroff thought Rainsford was dead but he wasn’t. When he sees Rainsford, Zaroff says, “Splendid! One of us is to furnish arepast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard, Rainsford”. They fought and Rainsford won.
