Maisie's primary conflict in 'Faceless' by Alyssa Sheinmel is between her and herself, or a mental health conflict. After surviving a freak accident, she is lucky enough to be able to receive a face transplant. However, after the procedure and seeing the results, she begins to feel like a stranger. Her mental health begins to deteriorate as she starts questioning whether or not she is still human at all. As of page 167, she has made no effort to face this conflict. Rather, she intends on moving to New York City believing; "What better place to be a freak than New York City?" (Pg. 123)She thinks that by moving to New York City, she will be somewhere where she finally belongs. And more importantly, away from people who know what she used to look like.
