In the beginning, there was nothing other than Niflheim, a place of frozen fog, and Muspelheim, a place of raging flames. In the middle of them was a gaping pit of nothingness called Ginungagap. One day crackling embers and ice crystals whirled together and kindled a spark of life . . .
From the spark of life rose an enormous, ugly shape. It was Ymir, the frost giant; the first of the race of Jotuns. At his side, an ice cow came mooing from the pit. Together they lived on the edge of Gigungagap. Ymir lived off the cow's milk and the cow lived by licking the salty brim of Gigungagap.
For a long time the cow licked; and one day, a head of hair sprouted out of the salt. She kept on licking and out came a new creature! This one was straight and handsome, unlike some of the Jotuns. Soon he had a son. That son married a Jotun maiden. Together they had three sons who were so fair that they almost shone with light. They were the first of the great Aesir Gods - Odin, Hoenir and Lodur.
