Origin and Diffusion of Language

- The Romance language originated in Rome and spread through hierarchical diffusion. Hierarchical diffusion is the spread of an idea from persons or nodes of authority or power to other persons or places.
- Roman armies conquered much of Europe, Southwest Asia, and North Africa. As they conquered these places, the Latin language was spread. Native languages of these conquered provinces were suppressed and or even abolished.
- Hierarchical diffusion is the spread of an idea from persons or nodes of authority or power to other persons or places. The Roman armies took control of many provinces. With control of many places, The Roman Empire was very powerful and had huge authority. With this power came the control of what languages these places used. Many languages spoken by natives were extinguished and suppressed. This was because the favored language, which the Romans spoke, was Latin. The Roman Empire was an authority figure which spread its language through the power it had, therefore making it an example hierarchical diffusion.
