  • The helpers and calm journey
  • And I'm Herb Seigler
  • I'm Larry Virgil
  • Welcome to my ship, Wavewalker
  • The start of terror
  • Just keep a look on the weather.
  • We must remain vigilant. The weather could get worse.
  • IN July 1976, me and my wife Mary, son Jonathan, 6, daughter Suzanne,7, set sail from Plymouth, England, to duplicate the round-the-world voyage made 200 years earlier by Captain James Cook.
  • Frightful breaking crest
  • The first leg of journey passed pleasantly, sailing down the west coast of Africa to Cape Town. There, before heading east, two crewmen — American Larry Vigil and Swiss Herb Seigler — helped them tackle one of the world’s roughest seas, the Indian Ocean.
  • The struggle
  • Oh my god! Somebody help us. Honey stay in there.
  • We need to make through this.
  • Despite atrocious weather, we had a wonderful holiday complete with a Christmas tree. New Year’s Day saw no improvement in the weather, but we reasoned that it had to change soon. And it did change — for the worse.
  • The ray of hope
  • We are safe now.
  • The first indication of disaster came at about 6pm, with an ominous silence.The wind dropped, and the sky immediately grew dark. Then came a growing roar, and an enormous cloud.The roar increased to a thunder as the stern moved up the face of the wave, and for a moment i thought we might ride over it. But then a tremendous explosion shook the deck
  • The whole ship was smashed from different parts, but it stayed intact, I and Suzanne were injured badly.The water pumping inside the boat.Wavewalker could hold any longer.Everyone was trying to fix boat and surviving with little food This continued for next 48 hours and by that time they were loosing all the hope, but endured everything for each other. UNTIL..
  • I rushed on deck and gazed with relief at the stark outline of Ile Amsterdam. It was only a bleak piece of volcanic rock, with little vegetation.my thoughts were full of larry and herbie, cheerful and optimistic under direst stress and of mary, who stayed at the wheel for all those crucial hours. my seven year old girl, who did not want us to worry about head injury and of a six year old boy who was not afrraid to die.
