Storyboard Text

  • When describing her fears after she became pregnant, Stella expressed she was relieved after she gave birth. She thought, "he newborn in her arms wasperfect: milky skin, wavy blonde hair, and eyes so blue they looked violet"(118, Bennett). This shows that Kennedy looks very white and has wavy blonde hair with dark blue eyes and a fair complexion.
  • When at dinner with Kennedy, Stella recalled how Kennedy was kicked out of school for smoking pot. She thought, "Only a lazy girl would get caught, and her daughter was clever but lazy, blissfully unaware of how hard her mother worked to maintain the lie that was her life"(175, Bennett). Kennedy was very smart but not careful with her actions. She had means to get the pot, but couldn't hide it well.
  • While at lunch with Kennedy, Stella thinks, "Quitting school to become an actor! The idea was so idiotic, she could barely restrain herself from saying so as soon as she reached for the menu"(175, Bennett). This shows that Kennedy quit school to become a full time actor. She doesn't think full time student is for her.
  • How does the character look?
  • When reflecting on her soap opera acting experience, Kennedy thinks, "She only played white girls, which is to say, she never played herself"(206, Bennett). Kennedy is questioning how she feels about her experience acting and how it affected her view and thinking.
  • What kind of person are they?
  • Stella was reflecting on the times she visited USC's campus with Kennedy. She thought, "...she’d visited just a handful of times: the college tour, where she’d trailed behind her daughter, gazing skeptically at the trellises climbing the red brick"(175, Bennett). One of the places Kennedy has visited in California, was the USC campus, her college of choice.
  • What actions do they take?
  • What does the character think about?
  • Where have they been?
  • What is the character like?
  • When describing her daughters growth, Stella thinks, "One morning, a faded Ramones T-shirt hung off her gaunt shoulders, the next, a plaid miniskirt inched up her thighs, and the next, along dress flowed to her ankles. She’d dyed her hair pink, twice"(176, Bennett). This shows that Kennedy is still young and trying to find herself. The different phases and hair colors and outfits show she is growing, but at the same time willing to move at her own pace and flow.
