- If you're not excited about college, then why go?
- Because its what I'm supposed to do.
- Man Vs Self: Jay doesn't want to go to college, but he won't admit it to his family. In this story when he is talking with Mia and she asks what will happen if he doesn't go to college and he says: "That's not even a possibility...I'll never find a job. And my parents will disown me, (pg 124). It makes him sad thinking about how he won't have fun or enjoy his life after high school, but he doesn't want to admit to his family or even himself that not going to college is not a possibility, making is a internal conflict.

- Man Vs Man: Jay and Tito Maning are arguing about what happened to Jun, and the ways the drug war is affecting the Philippines. This man vs man conflict between the two gets more heated as the book goes by and hits a high in this scene. In the text Tito Maning says: "What do you know about Jun? Did you raise him? Do you know why he ran away from home four years ago?" (pg 157). This shows their conflict as he bombards Jay with questions to make him confused and feel stupid. They are constantly arguing and mad at each other.

- Jay is ignoring his conflict about going to college. He doesn't want to go, but he won't admit it to his family, and so he plans to spend the next four years miserable in a place he doesn't want to be, studying something he doesn't like. This tells us that Jay is very pressured from his family, and he can't stand up for himself and what he wants. I think this foreshadows that at some point in the story he is going to be able to stand up for himself and what he wants. It indicates that the theme of the story will probably have something to do with him standing up for himself against Tito Maning.
