Storyboard Text

  • VOLCANOA crater in the Earth's crust, or the crust of another planet or satellite, from which molten rock, hot rock fragments, and hot gases erupt.
  • Looks like our topic for today is about volcanoes.
  • Very interesting! But first off, what is inside a volcano?
  • There is a chamber inside an active volcano where molten rock, known as magma, gathers. Inside the magma chamber, pressure builds up, causing the lava to flow through channels in the rock and out onto the planet's surface. Lava is the result of magma flowing to the surface.
  • Let's talk about the classifications of volcanoes.
  • Sir, what are the types of volcanoes?
  • V O L C A N O
  • Amira, can you name the three classifications of volcanoes based on their features ?
  • Very good, Amira.
  • There are three types of volcanoes. Cinder cones, stratovolcanoes, and shield volcanoes.
  • Thank you, Sir! What about the classifications based on their frequency of eruption?
  • Active, dormant, and extinct are the three types. Active volcanoes have erupted in the recent past, and they are likely to do so again. Volcanoes that have been dormant for a long time may erupt at some point in the future. Extinct volcanoes are unlikely to erupt again in the near future.
  • Please give an example of an active and inactive volcano.
  • I'll go first, Sir!
  • Mayon Volcano is an example of an active volcano. It is an active stratovolcano located in the province of Albay in the Bicol Region of the Philippines' island of Luzon. It is a prominent tourist destination known for its "perfect cone" shape and is revered in Philippine folklore for its symmetrical conical shape.
  • Mount Arayat is an example of an inactive volcano. It looms over the province of Pampanga in the Central Luzon region, which is known as the Philippines' Culinary Capital. Arayat is one of the Philippines' dormant volcanoes, with no reported eruptions in the preceding millennia.
  • V O L C A N OA crater in the Earth's crust, or the crust of another planet or satellite, from which molten rock, hot rock fragments, and hot gases erupt.
  • Let's look at what happens during volcanic eruptions and what we can do about it now that we know what volcanoes are.
