  • Sinking of The Lusitania
  • AlliedPowers and Central Powers
  • The spark that set off the war came on June 28,1914 in Sarajevo, Bosnia. A Serbian nationalist assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungary throne. This made Austria-Hungary declare war on Serbia on July 29.
  • New Technology/Trench Warfare
  • On May 7, 1915, a German U-boat sank the British liner Lusitania killing about 1,200 people including Americans. Germany said its U-boats will no longer target passenger liners and neutral merchant ships. President Wilson cut off diplomatic relations with Germany when it resumed unrestricted submarine warfare in February 1917.
  • The Armistice
  • Alliance systems were formed in Europe. TheAllied Powers were led by Britain, France, and Russia. The Central Powers were led by Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. Any conflict between two powers involved the others.
  • The Treaty of Paris
  • New technology was used in the war like fighter planes, armored tanks, rapid-fire machine guns, and poison gases. Soldiers fought in trenches with horrible conditions.They were hit by artillery, exposed to cold weather and contracted infections and diseases.
  • The Germans asked for armistice because they were losing. France and Britain required them to pull back their troops on the Western Front. They had to cancel the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and surrender their U-boats.Kaiser Wilhelm II stepped down . The armistice took effect on November 11, 1918.
  • On June 28,1919 German delegates reluctantly signed the treaty where they had to accept full responsibility for the war and pay reparations to the Allies. The League of Nations was created to settle disputes between countries peacefully. Wilson's peace plan,The Fourteen Points was rejected by the Senate.
