Aim of the play activity: to develop awareness of South African coins, 10c, 20c, 50c, R1, R2 and R5
Objectives: By the end of the play activity children must be able to identify animals that appear on each coin. Identify the difference between each coin, be able to sort them according to size e.g from the smallest to the biggest (ascending order).
Storyboard Text
- The teacher asks learners to pair up into groups and she starts preparing them for the play activity.
- Okay guys, I need you to pair up into a group of two members.
- The teacher gives instructions for the play activity which are: learners need to pick up coins placed on table and put them in ascending order in their groups while music is playing, when it stops they also need to stop.
- Yes Miss Williams!
- Did you all hear the instructions guys? Do you promise me to follow them
- Yes Mem. Can't wait to start.
- The teacher starts the music, one member in each group goes to pick up the coins while the other remains to put them in ascending order.
- The music is now playing, go!!
- Go Tom! the music is still on
- 10c and 20c
- The music stops, learners go back to their groups. The teacher starts asking questions based on the coins.
- Back to your groups guys! The music has stopped. So which coins do you have?
- We have 50c and R1.
- Tom come back! We have R1, R2 and R5 Miss.
- The teacher walks around to monitor how the groups have placed their coins. And asks them the final question based on their coins.
- Good job guys! I see you have placed your coins correctly in ascending order. Now without looking at them, tell me which animal is in your coin.
- 20c doesn't have any animal but has the protea flower
- The teacher gives marks to the group that got their answers right and how fast they were when picking up the coins from the table.
- there no animal in 50c but there's arum lily flower.
- R1= Springbok. R2= Kudu.
