  • Thomas Jefferson paid 15 million for the French to give us some of their land. The French gave the US double of what they had, and then they had the Louisiana purchase.
  • Stephen Long
  • Lewis and Clark traveled 123 miles of Kansas, and thought it was beautiful. Lots of berries and tones of deers. They thought it would be a perfect place to live.
  • Jackson's Speech
  • Zebulon Pike (first American to travel by land) thought Kansas was awful because they couldn't grow anything, and it was super sandy. Pike's description of Kansas started a huge debate if Kansas would be liable place to live.
  • Indian Removal Act
  • Stephen Long traveled by steamboat to Kansas. He decided to name Kansas "The Great American Desert." The view of Kansas being a desert stuck and the government got policies afterwards.
  • Jackson's speech talked about how the Indians are making their republic a disaster so he wants to desert them from the white people and put them in Kansas. They will make their own civilization and live the way they live.
  • The way the explorers would describe Kansas the government did not think Americans could live there. So, they had Eastern American Indians relocate to Kansas and other locations. The tribes found it difficult to live in Kansas because of the living conditions.
