Toussaint Breda was a slave since birth. His godfather and father taught him medicine and educated him. He was intelligent hence his master made him his coachmen. He was then promoted to a steward of the entire plantation's livestock this was usually held by a white man. After the revolt led by Boukman, Toussaint joined. He didn't joined as a soldier but as a physician. Later on he proved himself to be a commander.
When the British and Spanish invaded St Domingue and restored slavery, Toussaint had changed his name to Toussaint L' Overture and joined French forces .

Toussaint was en-charged of 20 000 black soldiers and went against the British in war to fight against slavery. By 1796 his word was law to the people of the North.

After the war, Toussaint turned his attention to the slave owning mulattoes and the French in the west and south. After the defeat of the mulattoes he was accepted as the master of St Domingue and appointed as Governer General.
Toussaint instituted a Constitution this gave St Domingue a status independent of France. Napoleon Bonaparte was incensed by this and refused to ratify it. He then deployed an army of soldiers with orders to remove Toussaint and restore slavery. His brother-in-law being General Le Clerc had taken Toussaint prisoner and deployed him to France.

He had passed away while being imprisoned. Although he did not lived to see his work, he had cleared the way for future leaders. He earned respect from all quarters. It was because of such leadership that the revolution succeeded.
