  • You need to pay for the costs of your defenses!!

  • Why are the colonists not buying any of our stuff?
  • Townshend Acts and the Boston Massacre
  • Come at us!
  • Come on! We're not scared of you!
  • Are you scared? Attack us, I dare you!
  • After the French and Indian War, Britain went into huge debt. To pay up the debts, Britain taxed the colonists because they believed that the colonists should pay a share of their cost in defenses. They taxed them with acts such as the Sugar and Stamp Act. This caused tension between Britain and the colonists because the colonists believed that their rights were being taken away by the Parliament.
  • Boston Tea Party and the Intolerable Acts
  • Take this Britain!!
  • The tea looks really good in the water.
  • Due to the taxes, colonists were angry. To show their resentment, they adopted nonimportation agreements against British goods. Nonimportation agreements were agreements made on not buying items imported from Britain. This impacted Britain's economy severely as American colonists mainly bought from them.
  • The Lexington Massacre
  • Attack! This is the start to our revolution!
  • A year later, the Townshend Acts were passed. Colonists tried to rebel against this act but failed. Therefore, because of the tea tax, the tension between Britain and the colonists increased. This tension led up to the Boston Massacre in March, 1770. A crowd of townspeople taunted the red coats, angering them. A gunshort was heard and then the red coats opened fire, killing 11 citizens.
  • The Aftermath
  • We finally have our independence!
  • On December, 1773, Bostonians, disguised as Indians, dumped tea into the Atlantic. This event is the Boston Tea Party. The colonists did this because they thought the British were trying to trick them into paying taxes although they were trying to sell tea at a cheaper price. As a result, the Intolerable Acts were passed to punish and take the rights of colonists. This upset the colonists even more, causing more tension.
  • Due to all of the tension between the colonists and Britain over the years, on April 1775, a battle at Lexington killed 8 Americans along with a battle at Concord that killed over 70 people. This battle is called the Lexington Massacre and would make the British realize that they had a war on their hands.
  • The aftermath of the American Revolution is that the colonists won their independence from Britain. The Treaty of Paris of 1783 was signed and brought the revolution to an end. This treaty allowed the British to formally recognize the independence of the United States.
