Alexis is going over to Rebecca's house to hang out, but Alexis has something important to tell Rebecca. Lately, Alexis has been struggling with her gender identity. When Alexis was born, she was assigned female as her gender, but she isn't sure how she feels anymore.
Alexis feels nervous about talking to Rebecca about her feelings of gender. People outside of the gender norms outlined by society are often judged for being different, Alexis is scared of being considered weird. What if she loses all her friends?
Hey Alexis! It's good to see you again! How are you?
Yeah, of course! Let's go upstairs.
Hi Becca, I'm fine I guess. Can we talk?
I'm so nervous... What if she doesn't want to be my friend anymore? What if she judges me?
I'm scared to tell Becca this. What if she thinks I'm weird?
Alexis feels she isn't like all the other girls. She doesn't fit in the roles typically assigned to girls. She doesn't like the traditionally girly things that all the other girls in her class like. Alexis feels that the gender roles of society don't fit her at all. Alexis doesn't understand why she can't just be like all the other girls.
So what did you want to talk about Alexis? Is everything okay? You look nervous.
Alexis has been doing some research into why she feels this way and she finally found a word for it. Alexis is transgender; her gender identity doesn't match her assigned sex at birth. Alexis wants to go by Alex and use he/him pronouns, but he isn't sure how to tell people. He is about to come out to his best friend for the first time. Coming out and telling the world who you really are is a scary experience, and for a lot of people, it isn't always a positive experience.
Becca... I have something to tell you. I'm not sure how to say this.
Alexis, what's wrong? Why do you look so nervous?
Alex comes out to his best friend for the first time and tells her the truth about who he is. He waits in fear as Rebecca thinks about how to respond. Coming out is scary. It takes courage to be vulnerable and allow people to know and see the real you. You never know for sure how people are going to react.
Becca... I'm a boy. I'm transgender. I was really scared to tell you this, but you're my best friend. I hope you accept me.
You're a boy?
Coming out is scary, and it's a difficult thing to do. But, it's a lot easy when you have people who love and support you.
Thank you for supporting me. Can you call me Alex?
Yeah, I'm a boy.
Of course I accept you! We're best friends. What should I call you now? Have you picked a name?
Of course I can! It's a perfect name for you. I love you Alex.
