- It's just not fair, Grace! How could he treat me like this? His own wife! I've never been in so much pain, and being shut up in a room 24/7 is demeaning!
- Here we go again...
- I'm being serious! Everyone regards me as less than human, but they would go mad too if they were in my situation!
- I understand, Bertha, but what am I supposed to do? No one will believe that you're not actually mad. I mean, you run around here like a loose hyena!
- WHO WOULDN'T IF THEY WERE ME?! I'M SICK OF BEING TREATED LIKE THIS—I'M A PERSON TOO!
- THAT'S ENOUGH! I try to treat you fairly, but all you do is prove yourself to be a worthless leech of society. Go to bed, Bertha.
- Later that night...
- It's time for me to stand up for myself. No longer will I be trapped here and viewed as a burden. Being shut in will never cure me, and I deserve better!
- Goodbye forever, Thornfield. Is this what freedom feels like?!

- Class is dismissed for the day; tomorrow we will be discussing job opportunities that women can engage in outside of the home.
