  • My Children's book was inspired by my trip to south Sudan this summer. In south Sudan I saw a unique culture that iv'e never seen before. I saw a culture that was happy with what they had, and not envious of what they didn't have. This mindset of there created a paradigm shift in the way I thought, U became more gracious, less envious and more happy. There happy demeanor made question why there would be a civil war in the first place. When I got home from my trip to Sudan I decided to research it's history and culture and was shocked to find there was around 600,000 sudanese immigrants.Other child stories helped me with a basis, fried bread specifically showed me how I could hint at immigration and let my audience figure it out. Fried bread talks about the ways fried bread can be made, but its really used in a way where they are changing the recipe of fried bread, and the uses of it because of how there native family is losing there once spiritual land due to colonization, and fried bread is a way to remind them of their culture. I used Lambslide to help understand how people live on a farm, and how much they care for there pets which is why I mention Lucy throughout the story. Lambslide talks about the roles of the farm, the animals like horses pigs, and cow's and what you do in a day to day life from a child's perspective. I used He came with the Couch for both art, and understanding assimilation from a children's perspective. He Came with the couch talks about a family in need of a couch looks and looks every where they think they can go until they go to a trash yard and find a couch, but the couch came with a little blue being, they tried and tried to force him to assimilate to there culture but it never worked, but when they finally stopped bothering him, he did. By using these books I was ultimately able to get a greater understanding of how to write my Children's story in a child friendly manner but also how to use immigration words and how to hint to them.
