Storyboard Text

  • Toussaint Breda, the real first name given, was a former slave who led a slave revolt against Napoleon. Although slave revolts would end in failure and executions, this did not stop him from doing so.
  • As Toussaint grew up, he learned he was more than a slave which encouraged him to learn how to read and write. He mostly read and looked up to enlightenment thinkers who spoke about the rights of an individual and equality.
  • As the French Revolution advanced and affected France, people would consider and question slavery, but would never continue on these thoughts and end slavery. Even though slavery was not abolished, the "Rights of Man" applied to them, which would eventually bring fury and anger to plantation owners. This would force revolutionaries to take it away from the slaves.
  • This would upset the slaves so much that it would eventually lead to a massive slave revolt. Toussaint would become the leader of the revolt, which would get him the name people know him by now, Toussaint L'Ouverture, which means "the one who finds an opening." He would help get success in in the fight against France, and invading the Spanish and Britain.
  • As he defeated France, he would help them gain independence, as the Jacobins would reconsider their thoughts about equality and freeing the slaves. This would ultimately end slavery in French colonies, which included Haiti.
