During the 1500's, Ireland was in disarray due to constant warfare caused by continental conflict. Ireland's peasant farmers hard time growing enough food for people. In the year 1600, potatoes were introduced.
In 1845, a fungus called blight spread throughout Ireland's potato crops and destroyed them. The fungus destroyed more than half of the potato crops and about three-quarters of the crops over the next seven years.
The British government tried to relieve the famine but their efforts were in vain. They authorized the import of corn from the U.S. which helped temporary with the starvation but most Irish people didn't know how to cook corn so they ate it raw and some people died.
They have more food than just potatoes here :D
Most people were moving from Ireland to America and other places because of the famine. Ireland's population fell from 8.4 million to 6.6 million. One million people died from starvation and other-famine related sickness.
Landlords would pay to send paupers to send pauper families overseas to British North America. Landlords would make empty promises of money, clothes and food. They would be crammed into poorly made British ships that was often known as coffin ships.
