- Cause 1: Impressments of U.S. Sailors.While France and Britain were fighting each other, they didn't want their enemy to trade with America, so they seized American ships. Britain, however, took this to another level by forcing American sailors to fight in the British navy, also known as impressment.
- You're now soldiers under the British navy!
- What?!?!?!? But we're not even British!!!
- Cause 2: British support of Native American resistanceTrouble with the natives grew as settlers moved west, and two Shawnee Indian leaders - a chief named Tecumseh and his brother, the Prophet- tried to fight back by uniting many natives into one strong Indian nation. They had a battle against a militia led by William Henry Harrison. After the battle, Harrison's men found British guns on the battlefield.
- General! Those natives left behind some of their guns while fleeing!
- What?!?!?!?!?!? These are British guns!!! Are the British supplying the natives?!?!?
- Cause 3: War HawksOutraged at these two causes, several young congressmen from the South and West - including Henry Clay of Kentucky and John C. Calhoun of South Carolina- were so eager for war with Britain that they were nicknamed "War Hawks". They argued that the way to make the frontier safe for settlers was to drive the British out of Canada.
- My fellow congressmen, Britain has taken captive of our citizens and impressed them into their navy! If that's not enough, we have found that they are supplying the very natives that we are fighting with!!! This is outrageous!!! We have no other choice but to declare WAR!!!!!!!!!
