  • I am desirous your assistance in one of those little experiments with which I amuse myself with here in my study.
  • Nonsense!
  • Now, would you deem it possible that this rose of half a century could ever bloom again.
  • Dr. Heidegger gives his friends glasses filled with water from the fountain of youth. They drink the water and they become younger than they once were. This is not enough for them and they cry for more water. Dr. Heidegger tells them to have patience but fills their glasses, again and they then drink twice more becoming even younger.
  • This story starts in Dr. Heidegger's study where he has invited four of his worthy friends over to tell them of an experiment he wanted them to take part in. These friends were Mr.Medborne who had been a merchant, Colonel Killigrew who had wasted his years on sinful pleasures, Mr. Gasoigne who had been a politician, and the widow Wycherly who was a great beauty in her day but now they were all melancholy old creatures.
  • I really must protest against this riot
  • Dr. Heidegger goes to get a special black book and pulls out a wilted rose. He explains to his friends that the rose was given to him by his lover half a century ago. He asks them if they believed that it was possible for the rose to bloom again to which they disagreed. Dr. Heidegger then throws the wilted rose into a vase with water.
  • Are we old again so soon?
  • The once wilted rose forms into a blooming new rose. Dr. Heidegger explains to them that the water in the vase is from the fountain of youth. He offers the water to his respected friends to bring their youth back to them. He ask that he only watch the progress of this experiment for he has no desire to be young again and is only curious as to what will happen when they drink the water.
  • They shout excitedly about how they are young leaping around the room. The widow asks the doctor to dance to which he declines and tells her that she has three gentlemen who would love to dance with her, At hearing this the men start to crowd the widow and fight about who gets to dance with the once again beautiful young lady. While in this pursuit the men had managed to knock the table with the water over.
  • After the four had settled down Dr. Heidegger shows them the rose that had become wilted and old once again. Then the four became old again as the rose had done just a few seconds ago. Dr. Heidegger says that he has learned a lesson from all of this which is to not seek out being youthful for he has already had his time. However, this is not a lesson his friends learned causing them to travel to the fountain and drink from it morning, noon, and night.
