  • The Old Regime
  • France is Bankrupt
  • National Assembly
  • During the Old Regime society was divided into 3 estates. These estates included people that were classified as either privileged or unprivileged.The unprivileged people had to pay taxes,but were still treated badly while the privileged people did not pay taxes and were treated well. The First Estate was a privileged class that contained high ranking officials of the Church.The Second Estate was also a privileged class that included Nobles. On the other hand, the Third Estate was an unprivileged class that included every other person,commoners, that didn´t fall under the high ranking category or the Nobles.
  • Storming the Bastille
  • The people that were high up in ranking and in charge was King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. Instead of using all of the funds paying for the French and Indian war and suporting the American Revolution the King and Queen spent it carelessly on fashion and on their own palaces. This put France in debt now affecting the third estate. This is because the First and Second estate refused to pay. Due to the Third Estate being unprivileged and the lowest class they were left with increased taxes to pay.
  • Radicals Take OverReign of Terror 
  • King Louis XVI called the Estates general which are representatives from all Three Estates to help solve France´s financial crisis. Each estate had one vote and the first and second estate could easily block the third estate from getting what they want,which was voting by population because it was give them an advantage due to them having a large population. Results were in and King Louis XVI locked out The Third estate from the meeting. The Third Estate ends up creating the National Assembly that vowed to establish a new constitution for France. Louis XVI did not want a wirtten constituition. In Paris on July 14,1789 news broke out revealing his plan to use military force against the National Assembly. This fueled people to go storm the Bastille.
  • Napoleon
  • People under the Third estate charged to the Bastille enraged on July14, 1789. This day ended up becoming France´s Independance Day. When the month of August came around the National Assembly issued the Declaration on the Rights of Man. The Declaration on the Rights of Man included the freedoms of speech,religion,the press and the right to a fair trial.
  • The Convention was a new group that came around and took over along with abolishing the monarchy. The monarchy still had the potential to be restored as long as the royal family lived so the King and Queen were put on trial for betraying their country. Louis XVI´s life came to an end on January 21, 1793 due to being beheaded. The Queen, Marie Antoinette, was beheaded after on October 16, 1793.
