Storyboard Text

  • Protagonist
  • Antagonist
  • Imagery
  • Montresor is clever, manipulative and evil. He is flat because all we see is the vengeful side of him. He is static because he does not grow or change over the course of the story. He stays evil all the way through.
  • Suspense
  • Fortunato is proud, somewhat foolish and very knowledgeable about wines. He is a flat character because we do not learn much about him beyond his pride in knowing wines. He is static; he has no opportunity to change or learn a lesson from Montresor.
  • Foreshadowing
  • “We passed through a range of low arches, descended, passed on, and descending again, arrived at a deep crypt, in which the foulness of the air caused our flambeaux rather to glow than flame” (7).
  • Mood
  • “I took from their sconces two flambeaux, and giving one to Fortunato, bowed him through several suites of rooms to the archway that led into the vaults. I passed down a long and winding staircase, requesting him to be cautious as he followed. We came at length to the foot of the descent, and stood together upon the damp ground of the catacombs of the Montresors” (6).
  • “…producing from beneath the folds of my roquelaure a trowel.” (8) This quote hints to how he will use the tool later when he bricks up the wall.
  • The story has a dark, sinister, creepy or eerie mood that is created by the setting of the catacombs, all the detailed imagery of their surroundings, the plot of someone getting revenge by killing someone, and the suspense and foreshadowing used throughout.
