  • King Ashoka
  • Ashoka was grandson of chandragupta maurya who founded the mauryan dynasty. His father was Bindusara, who was widely consider to be a good ruler of the kingdom, his mother was empress Subhadrangi a Hindu Bhramin.
  • Upon his father Bihndusara's death Ashoka and his brothers engaged in a war of succession and Ashoka emerged victorious after several years of conflict.
  • After his accession to the throne, ashoka fought only one major war, the kalinga war. The extent of brutality and violence, g,eatly disturbed ashoka and made him remorseful. After war, ashoka converted to Buddhisim.
  • Ashoka was able to rule over the vast and diverse mauryian empire through a centralised policy of Dharma that favored peace and tolerance and that administrated public works and social welfare. He likewise patronized the spread of Buddhism and art through the empire
  • Asoka's fame is largely due to his pillar and rock edicts. He is remembered as the model ruler controlling a vast and diverse mauryan empire through peace and respect with the Dharma at the center of his idiology.
