Grandpa kept Toto a secret from grandma. Grandpa had to leave for Dehradun and he hid Toto in his suitcase and took Toto with him. While grandpa was producing his ticket, Toto suddenly poked his head out of the bag and grinned at the ticket collector
Sir, you have a dog with you. You’ll have to pay for it accordingly.
Grandpa got really angry when the ticket collector called Toto a dog and took Toto out of his bag to prove that Toto was not a dog.

Toto was finally accepted by Nana. He was given a home in the stable. On Toto's first night, grandpa paid him a visit and found grandma sleeping. He gave Nana a slap across her haunches and she finally woke up. Toto and Nana never became friends.
One day, at lunch-time, a large dish of pullao stood in the centre of the dining-table. Nana entered the room to find Toto stuffing himself with rice.

Obviously Toto was not the sort of pet which could be kept for long. Even grandpa realised that. So grandpa found the tonga-driver, and sold Toto back to him for only 3 rupees.
