The story begins with Carmen and Don Julian discussing why Alfredo hasn't married his fiancee, Esperanza.

Don Julian brings Alfredo and he meets Julia, and their relationship grows over time as the number of interactions between them increases.
Alfredo tries to express his feelings for Julia. However, because he is still engaged to Esperanza, he begins to doubt what should be done.
Julia reveals she knows about the engagement and Esperanza makes him choose, revealing that she knows what's going on between him and Julia.

Alfredo chose to marry Esperanza because of his fear of public opinion.
