Hammurabi (ruled 1792-1750 B.C.E.) united most of Mesopotamia after a sucessful military campaign that the city of Babylon reached its first great glory.
During Hammurabi's reign as lugal (known as the First Empire), Babylonian rulers constructed temples, roads, and an extensive canal system. They also codified laws at wrote them in Hammurabi’s Code.
By Hammurabi’s time, Babylon had become a large, cosmopolitan city with many different people meeting on its busy streets. Hammurabi’s Law had to rule over many different people. His law code had to be simple, specific and direct and stop conflict with groups of people.
Babylonian engineers constructed famous monuments and temples, they even created 1 of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, known as "The Hanging Gardens of Babylon".
The Assyrian kings destroyed the first Babylonian Empire and left a legacy of war and destruction. After Assyrian dominance in Mesopotamia, which lasted from approximately 1400-600 B.C.E., the Babylonians established a second great Empire.
