  • Let's time travel back to when this really was happening.
  • Manifest Destiny - American Triumph or Tragedy
  • By Eliot Kwan
  • Declaration of Independence
  • Louisiana Purchase
  • With Thomas Jefferson signing the Declaration of Independence and the Louisiana Purchase, it really started the whole movement to the west. He purchased the Louisiana Territory which back then, doubled the size of the U.S. just for $15 million.
  • For the Americans, the Manifest Destiny was a triumph. The land that was added to the U.S. was so much that this is probably one of the biggest successes in all of America.
  • With the Louisiana Purchase signed by Thomas Jefferson in 1803, he immediately sent the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore their newly bought land.
  • I am strong, can swim, medicate others, entertain natives, build structures, hunt and much more.
  • The expedition called for strong and useful men, and York fit his role. Although he was a slave, William Clark knew he was going to impact the trip in a big way, and he for sure did.
  • Unfortunately, many of the natives were killed during the process of Americans moving westward. For Americans however, this had a huge impact on America. It started many people to move out to the west, populating the area, and making an economy out there. For the natives however, this was a huge tragedy. Their land was lost, and so were many of their people as well, but since we are talking for the Americans, it was a great triumph for them.
  • During their expedition, they met a native, by the name of Sacajawea. She was part of the Shoshone tribe, and a big part of the trip. She helped interpret for other tribes, and brought a huge sign of peace for the Americans.
