- Stella has a negative effect on jude making her paranoid in a way. Jude calls her mother to ask her about Stella and after they finish talking she begins to imagine Stella. The text states, “Stella in a smooth black limousine, hiding behind the tinted glass, Stella everywhere, always, and nowhere at the same time” (Bennett 237). Stella’s past experience with Jude has obviously left a mark on her mind. Stella’s past actions and mysterious reasons puzzle jude and she wonders why Stella does this.

- "Too bad, those legs with that face. That skin. Jesus, he'd never seen a woman that black before" (Bennett 91). This quote describes her appearance as very dark and to the discomfort of the bus driver.Now in Los

- Lou speaks to Desiree about her employment opportunities where she says she doesn't need work. The text states, "he didn't believe in accusing ladies of lying, and besides, he knew that Desiree needed work, even if she was too proud to admit it herself" (Bennett 67). This quote paints Desiree as a proud woman Desiree. Desiree would rather lie than tell the truth feeling too ashamed of her position.
