- Germany needed a strong army. Other countries did the same. We had to protect ourselves, that why we improved our army too.
- But, because everyone improved their armies, it made the War happen. No one even tried to stop it. Now millions of people and soldiers are dead.
- Militarism helped start the War. Every country built big and strong armies. That made us and everyone ready to fight. We just had no choice, but to prepare for war.

- The air is full of smoke. I can't see! Are we going to make it through this?
- Cover your heads. The trench might collapse! I can't hear anything but the explosions!
- I'm ready to fight! We can't let them break us down. I won't give up!

- The treaty changed the world, but in a bad way. Instead of making peace, Germany was mad at other countries, and wanted revenge. This led to World War 2.
- The treaty of Versailles was made to bring peace, but it made the situation harder. Germany lost land, had to pay a lot of money and their army was smaller. This made many Germans angry
- Some countries wanted to be fair, but some of them wanted Germany to be punished. They thought strict rules would stop another war. But the treaty of Versailles made Germany weaker.
