- I hope you all have a wonderful time! Our first contestant is Samuel Matters!
- Hello everyone and thank you for joining the talent show this evening!
- Well hello everyone! My name is Samuel Matters and I'm the Magician of Matter! I will use my magic skills to turn states of matter into another! I hope you all enjoy the show.
- So first, we'll start off by observing the particles in this cup full of ice. As you can see on the screen behind me, the particles of the ice are moving in place and are tightly packed together.
- Since ice is a solid, these particles are that of a solid. Solids have a definite volume and a definite shape. They cannot flow since their particles are tightly packed together which is due to the very strong interaction between the particles.
- I would!
- Thank you mister! Now watch as I use my magic heating powers to add heat to this ice. Anddd...
- Would anyone like to come up here to assist me?
- Oh wow! How did that happen?
- That happened because the added heat energy allowed the particles to move around each other, turning the state of matter into a liquid. These particles are also able to flow.
- ...the ice has turned into water! The solid has become a liquid! On the screen behind me, you can see that the particles have changed.
