  • Meg, Beth, Jo, Amy, and Mrs March open a letter from their father on Christmas day. The girls do not have much, and Mr March is at war, but when reading the letter they were all touched with what their father said, and all have refreshed incentives with a goal to be his proper little woman
  • Burdens
  • The girls set up their own makeshift theatre and dress up as characters. They act out plays, and after have a big feast, Mr Laurence sent over some flowers and bonbons and ice cream and lots of foods which the girls enjoy in splendid delight.
  • Neighbours
  • Meg and Jo go to Sallie Gardiner's new year party, and have upmost fun. Jo meets Laurie in a corner, and become good friends. Although they have burnt and old lothes, they still have just as fun as the others.
  • The Palace
  • The girls are sick of their poor life, and wish for the riches other people have. They complain of the jobs and work they need to do, and are unsatisfied of the way they live.
  • Jo goes over to Lauries house, rather saddened about the fact that Laurie is so lonely and has nothing to do in his big house. She cheers him up and they have a splendid time together talking about all sorts of things, as if they were always friends.
  • Next time, Jo brings the other girls along to see Laurie and his big house, but shy Beth is too scared to explore, even though there was a grand piano. Mr Laurence assures Beth that they wouldn't be disturbed, and Beth happily plays on her new found treasure.
