- Beatrice and her brother Caleb are on their way to school so that they can take an aptitude test that will tell them what faction they belong in.
- Are you nervous about the test?
- No.
- Beatrice Takes her aptitude test and it's inconclusive. She is told that she is Divergent and that she can't tell any one or she will be killed.
- You are Divergent.
- Dauntless
- Erudite
- Beatrice and her family go to the Choosing Ceremony. Caleb choose Erudite and Beatrice choose Dauntless. They do this by cutting their hand and letting the blood drip into the bowl that represents the faction they want to go to.

- Beatrice joins the Dauntless and jumps on a train with them. While on the train she meets a girl named Christina and they jump off the train together. Beatrice volunteers to jump off the building first and does it successfully. Beatrice meets Four and renames herself Tris when she enters the Dauntless house.
- Tris and the others begin training and going through initiations. However, Tris is in the red on the ranks and is supposed to be kicked out but hops on the train to an abandoned theme park for the next initiation anyways. They are going to play capture the flag and she is allowed to stay. Four chooses Tris first to be on his team for capture the flag and their team wins.
- Tris experiences her first simulation and does it in three minutes, which is three times faster than the normal time. Four realizes that Tris is Divergent when she experiences her second simulation.
