Storyboard Text

  • Exposition
  • True!-nervous-very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad?
  • Conflict
  • One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture-a pale blue eye, with a film over it.
  • Rising Action
  • I undid the lantern cautiously...I undid it just so much that a single thin ray fell upon the vulture eye. And this I did for seven long nights.
  •
  • We are introduced to the narrator. He is trying to convince the reader that he is sane. He explains why he had he to kill the old man because of his "evil eye."
  • Climax
  • The old man's hour had come! In an instant, I dragged him to the floor and pulled the heavy bed over him.
  • The narrator explains even though the old man was never mean to him, he just doesn't like the old man's "evil eye." Every time he sees it his "blood ran cold," and he feels the need to get rid of it.
  • Falling Action
  • A shriek had been heard by a neighbor during the night, suspicion of foul play had been aroused; information had been lodged at the police office, and they (the officers) had been deputed to search the premises.
  • The narrator sneaks into the old man's room night after night with his lantern so he doesn't wake the old man. He is waiting for the perfect time to kill the old man and his "vulture eye." He visits his room for seven nights in a row.
  • Resolution
  • Villains'! Disassemble no more! I admit the deed! -tear up the planks!-here, here!-it is the beating of his hideous heart.
  • On the eighth night, the narrator finally decides to kill the old man. He pulls the old man to the floor. He then puts the heavy mattress on top of the old man until he suffocates.
  • After a neighbor reported hearing a scream, police officers come to search the house. The narrator is so confident about hiding the old man's body, he's sure the police won't suspect anything.
  • As the narrator hears what he thinks is the old man's heartbeat getting louder and louder, he starts to unravel. He is convinced that everyone can hear the heartbeat of the old man. He can no longer stand the pressure and his conscience forces him to confess to murder of the old man.
