Hello class! Today we will be discussing the Good Neighbor Policy
The Buenos Aires Conference (1936), requested by President Roosevelt, adopted a draft treaty for the peaceful resolution of conflicts between American states.
The Good Neighbor Policy was the United States' approach toforeign policy established in 1933 by President Franklin Roosevelt.
It's primary goal is to ensuremutual friendlyrelationsbetween the U.S. and the nations of Latin America.
The policy's main principle was that of non-intervention and non-interference in the domestic affairs of Latin America
U.S. marines leave Haiti, Nicaragua (1934).
Historian Louis A. Perez argued that the Platt Amendment resulted in the conditions it had hoped to avoid, including Cuban volatility.
The Platt Amendment was repealed as part of Roosevelt's Good Neighbor policy toward Latin America. Cuba could now control its own affairs.
No government need fear any intervention on the part of the U.S.
U.S. exports to Latin America increased, and U.S. investment in the region rose.
Reciprocal Trade Agreements – U.S. lowered tariffs/duties with specific country in exchange for trading rights. This resulted in freer trade.
EX. 90%of Brazilian exports became duty free, U.S. became largest trading partner of all Latin American countries
