  • His breeding, sir, hath been at my charge (I.i.9). ------------------------------[T]his young fellow's mother [...] whereupon she grew round-wombed, and had, indeed, sir, a son (I.i.13-14).------------------------------But I have [...] a son by order of law, some year elder than this, who yet is no dearer in my account (I.i.19-20).

  • Cordelia exclaims that she loves her father only as much as a paternal bond. Feeling betrayed, Lear becomes angered and disowns Cordelia

  • The Earl of Kent tries to stand up for Cordelia. However, in the King's current mental state, he banishes Kent for defending her.
  • When majesty falls to folly. Reverse thy state And in thy best consideration check This hideous rashness. Answer my life my judgment, Thy youngest daughter does not love thee least, Nor are those empty-hearted whose low sound Reverbs no hollowness (I.i.151-156).
  • Edmund drafts and delivers a fake letter to his father where the contents reveal Edgar's plans to destroy his father.
  • O villain, villain! His very opinion in theletter! Abhorred villain! Unnatural, detested, brutish villain! worse than brutish! Go, sirrah, seek him; I'll apprehend him: abominable villain! (I.ii.75-78).
  • Edmund goes to his brother, Edgar, and says their father is enraged. Edgar is instructed to hide and wait for further instructions.
  • When saw you my father last? (I.ii.151).............................................................Parted you in good terms? Found you no displeasure in him by word no countenance? (I.ii.155-156).
